I don’t know about you, but with summer basically here (in the northern hemisphere), I’ve been feeling a bit unhappy.
I had this dream that I’d shift my baby weight in time for summer, but the reality was… It wasn’t happening.
If you caught my last blog post, you’d have read that I’m currently living in Sardinia.
So with the Italian weather heating up, there’s no getting away from the fact the bikini is going to be coming out, and……
Well, I’m not bloody ready to give this post-baby body an airing!
Before I had my baby, I was actually a big gym-goer, and you could also catch me running and swimming. So while I was pregnant, I thought that I’d get back into my training pretty easily after giving birth.
I mean, it’s not that I don’t know what to do!
However, truth be told, although I was good at exercising prior to the baby, I’m now feeling out of shape. A few limbs are out of joint, plus I’ve got a lot more weight to shift.
I didn’t know where to start with it all.
Also, I’m bloody impatient and I want immediate results! I’ve been finding myself getting really frustrated, as although I was doing bits and pieces of exercise here and there, I wasn’t seeing any real changes.
And if I’m really truthful with myself, my motivation hasn’t been what it could be.
I found myself grabbing a few biccies in the day and choosing to sit with a glass of vino instead of going for a walk.
However, after I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror recently, it gave me a kick up the arse.
I knew that if I didn’t act now, it’d be July before I knew it and I’d be annoyed at myself for not doing anything about it.
So I used a little trick that I learned: I told myself that I had a choice of two pains, the pain of discipline or the pain of regret.
Well, I bite the pain-of-discipline bullet and joined a bootcamp!
After a few months of struggling with shifting my baby weight alone, I decided that I needed expert help if I was to turn this big bootie back into a more manageable size by summer.
Honestly, it was a bit tough for me to reach out and join a bootcamp. It’s all in Italian and, although I’m slowly learning the language, an immersive bootcamp in Italian was still a bit of a scary prospect!
Also, I had to get over myself a little and realise that although I’ve previously been good at doing exercise by myself, this time it’s different.
I had to tell myself that it’s OKAY to ask for help and to need that extra kick of direction and motivation.
And you know what? It’s actually been really good fun!
Although not all of it is totally new stuff to me, it’s reminded me of exercises I’d forgotten about. Some of the training circuits I used to do had slipped my mind, but now I’ve been through them again, I can take them home and do them on my own.
Needless to say, the whole experience has got me thinking about the clients I work with for career coaching.
Some of them had progressed up the career ladder without using a coach before, but (similar to me with the exercise!), things had just got a bit too off-track to be able to go it alone. So they reached out for help.
Others wanted quick results and that extra kick of motivation. Like me, they didn’t want to continue with the trial-and-error approach, wasting time, effort and money in the process.
