Right now, I’m lucky enough to be spending the next few months in the sunny Italian island of Sardinia.

Doing this was a long-time dream of my partner’s, and as it’s a pretty awesome dream, I’ve been more than happy to go along with it!

Just the other day, I had a really interesting chat with a young waitress working in one of the local restaurants.

Basically, she’d made a dream of hers come true!

Last year, she came to Sardinia to visit a local guy she’d met. And although she didn’t ultimately fall in love with him, she did fall in love with Sardinia during her trip.

After her two-week stay, she was really sad to leave, and said to herself, “I want to go back and live in Sardinia next summer.”

For months after she returned to mainland Italy, she couldn’t stop thinking about coming back. So she hatched a plan to make that wish a reality!

Actually, at the time, she didn’t really know she was hatching a plan. She just decided to put out some feelers to see how she could get a job in Sardinia.

She went looking for acquaintances she knew who lived there, and acquaintances who knew other people who lived there.

Networking, basically!

She also made sure that she was doing really well in the restaurant where she worked in Italy, so if that anyone asked, they’d be told what a good waitress she was.

Personal branding at its best…

And all that hard work paid off! She was introduced to a local Sardinian restaurant team and now has a role there for the entire summer.

How happy do you think she is knowing that her dream came true?!

What’s also great is that the technique she used can work to make any career dream happen.

Here’s how it goes:

  1. Get clear on what you want. This will also help you get clear on who or what you need to know.
  2. Once you know who you need to know, you can work out how and where you can start connecting with them.
  3. You can also make sure that you’re known for the right reasons and build a good reputation for yourself. This obviously helps you get a morefavourable response when you do ultimately connect.

Note that it’s not always about WHAT you know, it’s about WHO you know and what you’re known FOR!

Over the forthcoming weeks, I’ll be talking about this topic more and delving into why creating a rock-solid reputation for yourself is key to making the career you dream about to happen.  Drop me a line here if you want to make sure you don’t miss out on this valuable info.

Also, at the start of this blog post, you might have noticed that I mentioned how I got swept along in my partner’s dream. Luckily for me, this was a pretty awesome dream and I’m happy to be part of his plan – on this occasion! 😉

But more often than not, when we become part of someone else’s dream, we often realise what they have in mind for us ISN’T actually what we want for ourselves.

This is where having your own career development plan is crucial so that you aren’t in sitting the hands of someone else, waiting around for things to happen.
